Some factors to consider in planning window treatments:
Bedroom window treatments should be able to block all light. Living-room curtains should
allow some light in.
Some blinds and shades may be impractical on large windows--they're too heavy to pull
up. If you have large windows, you should also know that inexpensive shades are often made
with seams down the middle.
Window treatments are rarely transferable if you move.
The only window-treatment absolute--drapes must reach the floor. Short drapes are the
decorating equivalent of men's pants that ride above the ankles. You may not want drapes
that are too long, however. Model rooms often show drapes that "puddle'' on the
floor. Not only are they dust-catchers, but in a traffic pattern their effect soon goes
from elegant to undone.
The most economical way to dress your windows? Designers suggest pleated shades, a
decorative pole, and side draperies--to the floor, of course.
